When we spoke to Ruler ‘s Matt Batey earlier this year , he detailed how he approaches music “looking for a feeling of being lifted up by the experience.” With his soaring hooks and insanely catchy riffs, he has a remarkable track record for hitting that mark. It’s no wonder that he’s become such a sought-after musician in the Seattle scene, using his instrumental wizardry and dynamic vocals to support acts like Cataldo and Rocky Votolato. Ruler has existed all along while he’s supported these artists, but for the most part, you’ve needed to attend one of his totally life-affirming live shows to hear Batey’s hooks in action. With Ruler’s latest single, “Complicated Mind,” we can now pour over just how expertly crafted Batey’s songwriting really is.
Over a chugging, muted riff, Batey opens the song with a litany of questions, “What are you running from? Is it real or is it dumb?” The push and pull between the pounding drums and the steady bass line heighten the tension, putting the pressure on like an indie rock interrogation. Suddenly there’s a brief pause, then we’re flying again as Batey wails a chorus condemning “you and your complicated mind.” Musically, it fits Batey’s mission of trying to feel lifted, even when the lyrics feel damning. They aren’t mutually exclusive ideas. The feverous pressure he’s exuding throughout the song feels like motivation – a coach grabbing you by the shoulders telling you to get back out there and to prove yourself wrong. It’s two-and-a-half minutes of guitar rock perfection, repeatedly bottling up and exploding.
Ruler currently does not have any upcoming dates, but you can follow the band on Facebook and Twitter to stay in the loop on future happenings. In the meantime, bliss out to “Complicated Mind” below.

Isabelle Brown premieres 'Pot Of Gold' (ft. Injury Reserve)
Debut track available now
"Channelling Winehouse, nostalgic and fresh at the same time...this British teenager's soulful voice will blow you away" The Fader
'Pot of Gold' is the stunningly assured debut track from Isabelle Brown, which features Injury Reserve and is available today.
Isabelle Brown is an old soul trapped in the body of a fearless fourteen year-old; as inspired by the rich emotions of Nina Simone or the force-of-nature energy of Tina Turner as that blend of old-school R&B, jazz and hip-hop influences found in A Tribe Called Quest. Isabelle's curious, contemporary twist on these classic sounds gets its first glimpse today on 'Pot Of Gold', a track effectively about fulfilling your potential and doing everything you can to the best of your ability. Premiering on The Fader, the refreshing, immediately-infectious results suggest a songwriter and vocalist of incredible promise, so much so that an ambitious email intro via a friend to Injury Reserve led to the quickly-rising Arizona rap trio jumping on the track too.
Isabelle Brown's story thus far is not that of your typical, potentially-precocious teen star-in-waiting: hard graft, grit and vulnerability, those core values of true Soul music, underpin even her most powerhouse vocals. Born and raised in Brighton, she wrote her first love song at the age of seven ("which when you think back," she says now, "is an absolute laugh, as I'd never even kissed a boy but thought I was the number one romance guru"). Brought up between two creative, unconventional households - her parents separated around the same time - Brown's irrepressible voice slowly began to draw on experiences of her own. She has spent the last couple of years singing, writing, performing or recording every weekend or school-holiday, with a close-knit circle of friends, collaborators and family protecting her (largely from her own furious ambition to "get on with it") every step of the way. A debut project, assimilating these early recordings, is expected early next year.
Balancing youthful, restless innocence with innate musical maturity, 'Pot Of Gold' suggests Isabelle Brown is quite simply born to do it.

“The lyrics [on ‘Dreamcatcher’] are dreamy and smooth, and the beat serves up a perfect contrast: it’s snappy, speedy, and vibey by comparison” - MiLK
"Dreamcatcher” & “So Good To You” featured on Spotify's Fresh Finds: Hiptronix & Six Strings Playlist. Playlists dedicated to "surfacing the latest songs from undiscovered artists that are capturing the world’s interest before the music becomes popular.”
"So Good To You" and "Dreamcatcher" featured on Apple Music’s Breaking Pop Playlist in 21 countries centered around “songs that are about to make a huge impact.”
Singer/songwriter Geneva White unveils her soulful debut EP Surface tomorrow, Friday, October 13th. Geneva’s expressive, bold vocals and sultry musical style already has many hooked. Not only has she garnered early praise from tastemakers such as V Mag, Buzzbands LA, and Live Nation’s own Ones To Watch, but she’s also been gaining momentum with the support from the editorial playlist curators at Spotify + Apple Music.
To celebrate the release of her EP, Geneva performed her first headline show at the Moroccan in Los Angeles on Sunday, October 22.
Geneva White is no stranger to the music industry. A native of Key Largo, FL, she attended the University of Miami Frost School of Music and quickly developed her career upon graduation as a singer, songwriter and guitarist. She leant her vocals to Kan Wakan (Verve Records) for some time, opening for Royal Blood and Arctic Monkeys. Upon leaving the band, she fell into the songwriting scene, finding herself in sessions with the likes of Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman (Chance The Rapper, J. Cole), Chris Hartz(Childish Gambino, Passion Pit), and the UK’s legendary drum and bass artist Shy Fx to name a few. While perfecting her writing chops, many in the industry told her that she should accept her career as a songwriter, but she refused to settle. She left LA for London and immersed herself in the jazz scene, ultimately rediscovering her love of creating music.
Within a week of returning to LA to focus on her own original music, Geneva’s artist vision started to come to fruition. She was selected to perform back up for Lorde at this year’s Coachella, forcing her to double down on her efforts; diving head first into rehearsals and spending every other wakeful moment in the studio crafting her debut release. Simultaneously across the pond, Armada’s Low Steppa chose his next single to be their co-written house anthem “ Can’t Lie ;” featuring the compelling vocals of Geneva White. With over 4.5 million streams on Spotify alone, features in numerous Apple Music curated playlists, and the ongoing support from BBC Radio 1, the single “Can’t Lie” is set to see continued success.

“Made of Gold,” produced by Lauv (Demi Lavato, Charli XCX, DJ Snake), is about recognizing your self-worth in a relationship with unapologetic lyrics “If I ain’t part of your plan, tonight it’s you and your hand.”
“I wrote ‘Made of Gold’ as a reminder to myself of my value and worth,” says Olivia. “It’s so interesting to me the lengths we go as human beings to be validated by others when the realty is it all stems from the inside out... I hope this song can help us all remember what we’re made of, whether it be gold, power, strength, confidence, beauty or whatever is true for you.”
