Malik Ninety Five - Need to Know

April 16, 2017 by N3 On The Track in Music, Hip-Hop, Rap

New Orleans artist Malik Ninety Five has been on fire since he began prepping the release of his highly anticipated new album, The Paradise Project. And the excitement for that project only intensifies with “Need to Know,” his moody and melodic new single that’s sure to become an anthem for anyone who prefers working alone.

Despite the hook’s lonesome (and addictive) message of “Smokin’, plottin’, just doin’ things on my own,” the track is very much a collaboration with fellow NO artists CLBTS and Westline. Both artists co-produced the track alongside Malik, who again proves that his talents extend beyond the booth.

Clearly, the kid can spit and sings better than some cats who focus on one or the other, something we’ve already heard in preceding joints “Link Up” and “Right Now.” But there’s a darker, more thoughtful quality to “Need to Know” that makes it all the more unique and refreshing. Malik’s message of doing things on his own doesn’t come across as contrived or false, either. You instead get the sense that he’s been let down by those close to him—perhaps a relationship that went south—and wants to focus on getting his while he can.

“Need to Know” is now available through all major digital retailers and streaming outlets. Keep an eye out for more content in promotion of The Paradise Project, which is set to drop this summer!

Malik Ninety Five - Right Now

January 02, 2017 by N3 On The Track in Music, Hip-Hop, Rap

After making waves with the recently released “Link Up,” New Orleans artist Malik Ninety Five returns with another promising single in “Right Now.”

The song embodies exactly what you’d want to hear from a modern Hip-Hop track that stays true to the genre’s roots, while pushing it forward. Malik’s rhymes are tightly constructed and weave a story about questioning the present and what life can bring, while the hook takes that message and turns it into a straight-up earworm. Likewise, Malik’s production is crazy-engaging thanks to its head-nodding drums, thick bass, and finely looped vocal sample ooo-ing in the background.

Like “Link Up” before it, “Right Now’ continues to build the anticipation for the New Orleans native’s forthcoming new record, The Paradise Project. And even though we’ll have to wait until late April of next year to hear it, TPP is sounding like it’ll definitely make some year-end lists come December 2017.

“Right Now” is now available for stream and download through all major digital retailers, via EMPIRE Distribution.

Malik Ninety Five - "Link Up"

November 02, 2016 by N3 On The Track in Music, Rap, R&B/Soul

New Orleans-bred artist Malik Ninety Five is making some of the most interesting and left field Hip-Hop right now. His latest single, “Link Up,” proves that point by deftly bridging the gap between pulsing early ‘90s Hip house and the more melodic Rap of the past decade.

The track also proves that the 21-year-old rapper/producer is on the cusp of something bigger, though he’s already received notable accolades through coverage by tastemakers Pigeons & Planes and DJ Booth , among others. And if you’re not hip to the kid yet, consider this your opportunity to catch up—and enjoy a good-ass tune while you’re at it.

The music of “Link Up,” which was produced by CLBTS and Malik, is built on driving percussion and a slick flip of the same Isley Brothers sample that heads will instantly recognize (“Between the Sheets”). It’s the ideal setting for the young artist to straight-up float with his smooth cadence and vocals, which reach those super-catchy, earworm levels on the hook.

“Link Up” is now available for stream and download through all major digital retailers, and serves as a sampling of what we can expect from his forthcoming LP, The Paradise Project, which is set to drop April 28th of next year.
