Dearly Beloved - Race To The Bottom [Music Video Review]

August 23, 2019 by Travis Erwin in Music Videos, Indie Rock

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

“This single caught me by surprise. The varying vocals hooked me early, and the retro rock sound is perfect for the blend of voices. Production wise this one left the vocals a bit more muffled than I would have preferred which probably hurt my overall emotional attachment, but I am quite intrigued by the obvious talent and look forward to hearing more from this band.”

    Coqui - The Pain [Review]

August 23, 2019 by Travis Erwin in Music, Indie Rock

    Rating: 4.5 out of 5

“The vocals contain this ragged edge that immediately grabs your attention before the chorus delves into a bit of funk. Both of which adds a level of intrigue to a guitar melody and set of lyrics that resonate by showcasing the drudgery we all face.

    Rock on, Coqui. Rock on.”

Edwin - Lucky Penny [Music Video Review]

August 19, 2019 by Travis Erwin in Music Videos, Indie Rock

      Rating: 4 out of 5

“I would describe this single as funky folk to make you smile,

’Lucky Penny’ feels like the kind of song you’d sing to yourself when feeling good despite the crap life tosses your way. The video captures the same vibe and spirit.”

Robert Connely Farr & the Rebeltone Boys - Just Jive [Review]

August 18, 2019 by Travis Erwin in Music, Indie Rock

        Rating: 4 out of 5

“This is an old-school, blues rock number for those with a little rockabilly to their soul. The kind of single that is perfect to grab your baby and hit the dance floor, or to grab a bottle of whiskey, close your eyes and drink without falling too deep into melancholy.”

Bad Flamingo - Fire [Music Video Review]

          Rating: 3.5 out of 5

“Fire” lights a match with its catchy chorus and smooth guitar strings, I can see why it makes great show placement. ”

The Brookes - Spaceship Rodeo [Music Video Review]

August 07, 2019 by Travis Erwin in Lyric Video, Music Videos, Indie Rock

            Rating: 4 out of 5

“With a sound that hints of punk and 90s alternative, The Brookes launch their single ‘Spaceship Rodeo’ which is captivating at liftoff, even before you get into the smart, ethereal quality of the lyrics.

This kind intelligent indie rock is a throwback in many ways as it captures the best sounds of yore, while still feeling fresh, smart, and cutting edge.”

Mike Liegel - Talk to Me [Review]

August 02, 2019 by Travis Erwin in Music, Indie Rock, Commercial

              Rating: 4.5 out of 5

“With a beat that mimics the thump of a racing heart, ‘Talk To Me’ brings an edge to falling in love — or at least lust.

An alluring single that pays homage with a sound that hints at the 80s at times, yet still feels very contemporary as well.”

“What begins with haunting sweet vocals, morphs into an energetic promise to herself that resonates well with anyone who has ever taken a leap of faith.

The first few verses have a decidedly singer/songwriter vibe and the latter half brings more of a pop sound, but the continuity of the song is never in question.”

And while the vocals are not explosive or awe-inspiring, they are perfect for the mood. This is a case of the artists getting out of the way and letting the lyrics and vibe do the heavy lifting. ”

The accompanying video is engaging in a peculiar sort of way, and the vocal performance, laid over the top of a steady rock beat, has an old school rock vibe that conjures thoughts of the 80s.

Then there is a presence about Leeroy Stagger that hooked me and whispers to my brain ... “Pay Attention, this guy is on the verge of breaking out into another realm which makes this song feel like an archway to something even bigger.”

“Reminds me of a power ballad of the 90s, from artists like Joan Osborne.

Lyrically ‘Shitty Tattoo’ sings out as the rallying cry of generation that has hit the wall between hope, energy and homesick nostalgia, but this song is well-written enough to pull emotion from anyone who has ever made a bad decision or three. ”

Ben Lorentzen - All Knives Out [Review]

“Parts of the vocals reminded me of Elton John while other parts show influence from songwriters like Tom Waits. Then there is the 70s influenced melody that at times made me think of the Eagles. What I am saying is there are a lot of good musical influences that have came together to make Ben Lorentzen a talented artist full of surprises .... vocally, musically, and lyrically.”

“Sometimes you need to hear a gritty rock song played the traditional way to feel the heart of what music is all about.

Headphone makes it easy to escape the manufactured world of looped beats and recycled melodies to give us ‘Ready Steady Run,’ a rock jam in every sense of the word.”

Run River North - Wake Up [Review]

“The merry-go-round of life can either grind you down, or you can take heart in the rhythm and enjoy the ride. Run River North is suggesting we all do the latter with their new single.

Catchy and infectious, this sing-song chorus obviously carries a double meaning for those who dive in deep, but others will simply be happy to bounce to the groove and carry on about their day. Perhaps those individuals have already gotten their ‘Wake Up’ call.”

“There is some great irony that this tune, about the fantasy of escaping the world by throwing your phone out the window, carries a retro rock sound from the 80s, which is perhaps the last decade when society wasn’t fixated on their phones.

Great old school rock melody and vocals.”
