SG Lewis - "Better" [Video]

August 19, 2018 by N3 On The Track in Music, Music Videos, Pop

Songwriter, producer and musician SG Lewis today shares the video for his collaborative new single ‘Better’ with rising US star Clairo. The result of a chance writing session in LA, the track instantly became a viral hit last month and was labelled “addictive” by Pigeons and Planes” with Hypebeast calling it “the perfect summer jam”.

The innate chemistry the duo shared in the studio has now naturally translated into the fun, care-free video for ‘Better’. Shot in Chicago and produced by Weird Life Films (Ravyn Lenae, Soccer Mommy), ‘Better’ features both artists as they drive around the city in full-length tracksuits in a loving homage to classic Hype William’s directed videos of the later nineties, early noughties.

Speaking on the track, SG says “I played Clairo the instrumental and she jumped on it straight away! The process was so natural, I kept the beat unquantized from the jam as I felt like it gave the record an old disco feel”. The single is the perfect marriage of SG’s signature warm, sunny house production and Clairo’s dreamy vocal delivery. Clairo reflects, "Sam is one of the most talented producers I know. We met the same day that we made this song, and just clicked instantly. “Better” is one of the first real steps I’ve made into ‘pop music’ and this collab feels like a match made in heaven!"

‘Better’ is the latest in a long run of exceptional collabs for SG, with his upcoming album featuring J Warner, Kartell and a host of others yet to be announced. After an incredible run of dates across Europe, America, Australia and Asia so far this year, SG also recently announced a landmark headline show at London’s iconic superclub Printworks on December 7th. In addition he will return to the US for a full tour starting in September making stops at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere on September 28th & 29th and LA’s The Fonda Theater on October 19th.

This year, SG Lewis began releasing music from his ambitious three-part album ‘Dusk, Dark, Dawn’. Currently in phase one - ‘Dusk’ - SG imagines the trajectory of one night out in club music and is a loving tribute to club and youth culture. Referencing a wide breadth of styles and genres, ‘Dusk’ uses disco, west coast hip-hop and 80s electro to set the scene. Soon to move into Phase 2 - ‘Dark’ - he’ll use heavier styles like techno and rap to move the crowd into the night before heading off on his worldwide tour.

US pop prodigy Clairo is on an undeniable ascent, with collaborators including Rejjie Snow and Danny L Harle and her ‘diary 001’ EP receiving major accolades across the world.

Today, Sydney’s What So Not reveals the sci-fi-esque video for “Better” ft LPX (dir. Mafalda Millies) HERE on the eve of his seven date co-headline tour with US beat master Baauer – a B2B made in bass heaven. On “Better” Emoh teams up with LPX, solo moniker of Lizzy Plapinger of American duo MS MR.

Video director Mafalda Millies says: “Playing off the premise “I’m Better Than...”, this music video features Emoh and Lizzy captured in a visually oversaturated cyber void, dominated with footage surrounding the notions of temptation and seduction; of simulacra and simulations.

All visuals are layered and combined with animated, digital graphics, pie charts, numbers—An overload to the senses highlighting the degree to which we are consumed, distracted and controlled by the flood of content directed at us daily. This collage-based video is made up of both, original footage and found footage; and was very much inspired by artist Stan VanDerBeek’s “Movie Mural” (1968).”

“Better” debuted live at What So Not’s headline Coachella slot in the Gobi tent where audiences experienced the Australian producer’s full artistic vision, a giant chrome horse on monster truck wheels rivaling a hollywood film set. Since the live reveal, bootleg versions of “Better” have been eagerly sought after by fans and is now available here. Emoh explains "I had a few productions I’d been working on in this sonic field but struggled to find a vocalist with the right attitude and tone to fit. Lizzy and I clicked instantly on this trajectory and began jamming on the tune.”

The last year has shaped up to be one of the most significant periods in What So Not’s career; he delved into writing & co-direct music videos, such as EP title track “Divide & Conquer” & “Trust” which features model, actor and dancer Shaun Ross, and produced now staple festival anthems: “Divide & Conquer”, a remix of RÜFÜS’s “Innerbloom” , and a collaboration with Skrillex and RL Grime on “Waiting” . He contrasted these dancefloor ready tracks with an eclectic mix of softer soundscapes release on his debut solo Divide & Conquer EP, as well as dabbling in production for Albanian pop star Era Istrefi on her hit ‘Redrum’.

About LPX:

After coming off the road with MS MR a year ago the newly solo LPX, released two critically acclaimed singles, “Tremble”and “Tightrope” and performed a string of sold out headline performances and support spots for heavyweights Haim and RAC across North-America on separate tours. LPX’s debut release is slated for later this Fall.
